What makes Vanguard "Classical + Christian + Black rooted?"
Classical Wisdom
Truth, goodness, and beauty––through the Great Classics, clear writing, and
strong reasoning.
Christian Formation
Christ-centered discipleship that shapes character, conscience, and calling.
Black Intellectual Tradition
Rooted in Black cultural memory and achievement, we help students see themselves as heirs of wisdom––called to build, create, and repair.
BELONGING & LEADERSHIP
The House System
Vanguard's House System creates belonging, mentorship, and healthy competition. Each student is placed into a House––an inter-grade community that connects families and students across age levels––so every child is known, challenged, and celebrated, building character, leadership, and unity through shared rhythms and traditions.
Each house bears the name of a Black Christian intellectual or community leader, inviting students into a sacred inheritance of faith, learning, and public virtue.
House of The Reverend Dr. W.K. Jackson
Virtue: Fortitude
Steadfast leadership for the community.
House of The Honorable Vicki Miles-LaGrange
Virtue: Justice
A legacy of firsts––serving with excellence and equity.
House of Mr. Walter & Mrs. Frances Edwards
Virtue: Generous Stewardship
Builders of opportunity––using resources to heal and strengthen community.
House of Dr. Cornel West
Virtue: Prophetic Witness
Truth in love for the sake of the common good.

What is Black Classical Christian Education?
Black Classical Christian Education is an approach to learning that is Christ-centered, classically rigorous, and rooted in the Black intellectual tradition. Students are formed to love God and neighbor while pursuing truth, goodness, and beauty through rich literature, strong writing, thoughtful discussion, and disciplined habits. At Vanguard, "Black classical" is not a diversity add-on––it means students inherit a legacy of Black excellence in faith, thought, and leadership, and are prepared to serve their communities with wisdom, courage, and joy.
